Come far enough east and something changes. The east side of the map, with Bar and Zhmerinka, is the County of Bratslaw ... at last, not another monarchy wald. But Bratslaw is a largely unpopulated forest province stretching from the Oppilian Upland to the Vinnit Forest; the land is a high, exposed plateau, frigid in winter, with poor soil. The area is much greater than those of Ternopol or Podolia, while the population is only 16,500. The oldest settlement is the village of Bratslaw, founded in 1362. Every other settlement was founded after 1500 and there is only one that has more than a thousand people, Nestervar. In other words, it's wild. Today, it's been cleared and made sustainable, but in the 17th century it was a tangled, desolate mixed forest and steppeland. This makes it rather easy to map, as there's less here.
Completing the above, it already looks like Bar may lack any road connection with the outside at all:
With a 10 infrastructure, the east side hex is a primitive rural land ... but the reader can see how unmapped adjacent hexes have only 3 or 4 infrastructure. It's going to get very empty very quickly. But first, we'll have to finish mapping southern Podolia. That's tomorrow.
